Hello! My name is Alex Rubenstein, and I am a senior at Clovis North High School. Last year, I was in Psychology and Human Behavior and this year I am in Biotechnology. The Psychology Lab taught me many important skills that I can use both in and out of the classroom. In that class, I learned how to study effectively, collaborate with others on group projects, and give a professional presentation to both students and adults. I was able to learn about numerous psychological concepts and how the brain works on a neurobiological level. In English, we read various books that related to the topics we were learning about in the psychology and neuroscience classes.
This week at CART, my lab is learning about bacteria in my biotechnology class. There are three main shapes that we learned about: coccus, bacillus, and spirillium. We looked under microscopes to observe the different shapes and arrangements of bacteria. It was really cool to see different types of bacteria in real life. It was also my first time using a microscope, so it was amazing to get the experience to use one. In English, we are learning about different types of cloning and the various ethical issues that each type has. Cloning is a very controversial topic for many reasons, one being what to do with clones once they are made.
At my home school, I am a part of our drama program, THE Bronco Drama. We are working on our mainstage play, The Father. I have the privilege of being the stage manager for this production, so I spend a lot of my free time at rehearsals. I feel very fortunate that I get to participate in an extracurricular activity at my home school and attend CART.
The environment at CART is welcoming and friendly, two things that make up the perfect learning environment. Since I have been at CART, I have met so many new people, learned about career opportunities I did not even know existed, and received a hands-on learning experience that is unique to CART. If you are considering applying to CART, I highly recommend going on the tour that your high school offers later this school year.
